The Best of N The Zone: 01-15-17

img_20170115_093530Unfortunately there is no NEW episode this week due to some unfortunate circumstances in town. However, we do have a wonderful “BEST OF” show for you. In a matter of speaking this is a Rams-themed episode. Total coincidence when myself and Palmer put this show together. Seriously. I got two monologues from Palmer on the Rams; mostly William Hayes, Jeff Fisher, and former D’Marco Farr. Plus we have two “classic” interviews with former Rams QB Tony Banks and Joe Laurinitis, better known to wrestling fans as Road Warrior Animal, and also the father of former Rams linebacker…James Laurinitis.  Banks talked about being a young QB in the NFL and how hard it was to overcoming certain issues (this was around the time of the RGIII saga) and Laurinitis talked about being the best tag team EVER along with why he and the WWE aren’t the best of friends. Very intriguing interviews for sure.

Sam Bradford: The Complaining Thief

962364_1280x720

@thelegendkil

ST. LOUIS, MO

With the arrival of the NFL draft approaching, there has been no let down when it comes to wheeling and dealing by teams looking to inject something positive into their franchise with a game changing player. Last week the Los Angeles Rams traded their first round pick (Number 15), two second round picks (43 &45), a third round pick (76), and the Tennessee Titans will get Rams first and third round picks in 2017. That’s what the Rams gave up for the number one overall pick in the draft. This will mark the second time the Rams have picked number one overall since 2010.

And in 2010, while the Rams where still residing in St.Louis, they decided to draft Sam Bradford with that pick.  That pick failed to live up to the hype of an elite quarterback, with the former Heisman winner receiving a 6-year, $78 million dollar contract ($50 million of it guaranteed). Bradford was just a tease, he had all the tools to make himself one of the best in the NFL, but he lacked the most important ingredient any football player should have – and that’s heart.

He was coddled by the press – and it got worse when Jeff Fisher became head coach in 2012. But last year, in an unexpected twist, Bradford was dealt to the Philadelphia Eagles for Nick Foles. Fisher was perturbed that Sam Bradford wouldn’t take a pay cut, especially after several other veterans did so. Most thought that once Sam Bradford got away from the Rams his star would rise and he would prove naysayers wrong.

And boy he did over achieve. He went 7-7 as a starter for the Eagles putting his career record at a “dazzling” 25-37-1. A “eye-popping” winning percentage of .405, yet he bolstered 19 TD’s with 14 interceptions and 3,725 passing yards. His career totals are 78 TDs/52 INTs and 14,790 yards. These are some of the most deceiving numbers you’ll see a starting QB have without taking one single snap in the playoffs.

Now Sam Bradford is demanding a trade from the Eagles. Just a month ago they signed him to a two year deal for $35 million, with 22 of it being guaranteed.  This is happening all because the Eagles, just like the Rams, made a huge deal with the Cleveland Browns to land the number two pick in this year draft.

The Eagles traded (No.8) pick and fourth round pick this year – and traded away first round pick in 2017 and second round pick in 2018. The Eagles will more than likely use that pick on a QB.

Philadelphia Eagles Executive VP of football operations Howie Roseman is quoted in an ESPN.com story by Phil Sheridan as saying “Let me be clear. Sam Bradford is our starting QB. We told him that.” Not that it mattered to Bradford. He threw a tantrum and is now demanding a trade. Talk about entitlement – this guy has the gall to throw a fit because the Eagles want to draft a QB with the second pick.

He should be doing all types of praise dancing after stinking up the Edward Jones Dome for four years, getting traded and collecting every penny of that rookie contract – only to have the Eagles gift wrap an additional 22 million guaranteed. He’s never had to fight for a job as the starter his entire career, and he can’t even handle competing against either Carson Wentz,  Jared Goff or former Missouri Tigers QB Chase Daniel. We are seeing the real guy now and it’s more than unflattering.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles feel blindsided by Bradford’s trade request. “Too much dead cap $11m if they trade him before June 1 Broncos and Jets seem good spots though #NFL #shutUpSam,” says longtime Philadelphia radio host Phil Allen (now program director for 98.5 FM and contributor to NTheZone), said via Twitter.

That was about the cleanest tweet I could find coming out of the city of Brotherly Love.

Sam Bradford has fooled us all for years. He’s managed to get over 100 million playing a shade over .400 football, no playoffs and shaky health.

THE A-TRAIN RANT 14.0!

296958_1545752100335_1731016917_773274_1225805634_n1.jpg

Time for the 14th edition of The A-Train Rant…hope your sports weekend was good, here at A-Train’s home…umm hell no.

That’s why I’m hear to rant about it…enjoy.

PRE-RANT: I always look forward to what Kevin Slaten has to say about Missouri sports…ALWAYS. Some things I like, others I don’t. He can be sane, he can be crazy. He’s entertaining. He makes sure you have something to say (if you listen to him). Check out “Slaten Unleashed” on TalkSTL.com every weekday from 3pm-6pm. Sometimes it’s good to be antagonizing, other times not. Still a sight to see each weekday afternoon.

  1. I’m cheering for Florida State in the national championship. Auburn did what they had to do in the SEC title game but I’m going against them.
  2. Welcome back, Kobe Bryant. Am I being nice to Jellybean? In this case, yes. Just hope it doesn’t bite him in his ass making this triumphant return and winds up going back on the shelf.
  3. Speaking of injuries, I would be happy that Rob Gronkowski got hurt…but I can’t. The reason is because you’re seeing a long trend of top players get hurt. I understand football players take pain and so do other athletes, but when is it smart to comeback and play again?
  4. I had no idea that baseball managers could get in the Hall of Fame so easily…Tony LaRussa, Joe Torre, and Bobby Cox are in.
  5. I guess I’m supposed to be thrilled for the Lambs (yeah I called them that) right now. Thanks to a friend, I understand Jeff Fisher. He has no control of his damn team. Several games this season, this bum ass team decides they want to fight their opposition. FOR WHAT? Is that supposed to fire up the team? In at least 4 of the games I saw they got in fights and grabbed a plethora of penalties. No control whatsoever. NONE. I understand this team has no QB, yeah no quarterback and I guess those draft picks are looking nicer every day. Thanks Washington.
  6. Mizzou football will be in great shape, the day they get a different coach. Pinkel can’t win big games. He sucks bad. Last 2 conference championship games he’s been in, he gets smoked. Then has no idea how that ever happened. However, Mizzou had an unforgettable season, can’t take away what they did.
  7. Speaking of Mizzou, shoutout to CBS Sports for having a Mizzou Saturday…great win for the Men’s program beating 18th-ranked UCLA.
  8. Cano and Ellsbury got paid. I still hate Cano.
  9. Good bye, Roy Halladay. Halladay announced his retirement after 16 seasons. I will never forget his 2010 season, Halladay threw a perfect game and then a no-hitter in the postseason. Shame he didn’t get a ring while in Philly. He had no chance in Toronto. NONE.
  10. The death of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling is near, they lost their biggest acquisition in AJ Styles.
  11. Please Daniel Snyder, do us all a favor and put Mike Shanahan out of his misery.
  12. Rudy Gay going to the Sacramento Kings does nothing for them. You got a bighead jackass in DeMarcus Cousins. Unless both can work together as a tandem, I don’t think it will work out in Sac-town.
  13. The Super Bowl being in New York City is hilarious…you asked for this one. “Cold weather is where the game is supposed to be.” Because of this, now you have restrictions. No tailgate parties at Meadowlands Stadium. Enjoy.
  14. Keith Olbermann (whom I have caused a response with on Twitter) had this to say about cheating. I hear a lot about it. Shoutout to Solomon Alexander for this but it’s great. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5N1XoJq_fk

That’s all I can think of for now.

More to come.

THE A-TRAIN RANT 12.0!!!

296958_1545752100335_1731016917_773274_1225805634_n1.jpg

Time for another edition of The A-Train Rant…12.0!

  1. USC hiring Steve Sarkisian was straight disrespectful to Ed Orgeron…DISRESPECTFUL!
  2. Iron Bowl 2013 had the greatest ending in a college football game. Shoutout to Auburn for that epic win.
  3. Mizzou beating Texas A&M on Saturday night showcases that college football is better than the NFL.
  4. Kellen Clemens really freaking sucks. So does the Rams receivers.
  5. The college game is way better than the pro game…that goes for football AND basketball.
  6. Royce White is a jackass…check out the story here: http://blacksportsonline.com/home/2013/12/royce-white-says-hes-willing-to-fly-now-to-get-back-into-nba/
  7. Ohio State should NOT be in the national championship…prove that you can have another perfect season…next year and then put you in. Not this year. Sorry, Buckeye Nation. Neither should Michigan State. Get mad all you want.
  8. If college football will continue to allow teams with tough schedules to get high in the BCS…then Auburn or Mizzou should be in the national championship. Remember Mizzou wasn’t supposed to be this good anyway.
  9. It’s time for these big schools to play the small schools…WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SCARED FOR? If your program can’t be a smaller program, you shouldn’t be with the big boys. PERIOD.
  10. AGAIN…Jameis Winston should be the Heisman Trophy winner.
  11. I used to dislike Richard Sherman, I have the greatest respect for him…he goes out, talks trash and backs it up. I think I want to move to Seattle.
  12. With that said, the Seattle Seahawks are probably the BEST team in the NFL. Not Denver, not KC, not New Orleans.
  13. It’s like Jeff Fisher and Brian Schottenheimer just continue to make terrible play calls for the Rams. I don’t get it.
  14. Duke and Kansas don’t look like the stronger teams that people are used to seeing. My Tar Heels don’t look it either, yet I hope they surpass the both of them.
  15. Nate Robinson says that referees hate him…ummm Nate, you give people a reason for them to hate you. The antics he does give folk the side eye. I loved him in Chicago. I wish Gar Forman re-signed him. That energy he brings to the game is great, just those antics need to be calmed.

I’m done. More to come though.

THE A-TRAIN RANT 7.0!!!

THIS A-TRAIN RANT IS SPONSORED BY…

THE ANGRY REDBIRD!

  1. Peyton Manning is the best QB of all-time…the hell with Brett Favre. After a comeback like that with a not so great team. He can damn near do anything.
  2. Matt Holliday, Jon Jay and Yadier Molina need to learn how to hit in the playoffs. A few instructional videos with Fred McGriff shouldn’t hurt. Don’t act like you don’t remember those.
  3. Jeff Fisher did a good thing on Sunday with Greg The Leg, trying for him to kick a (would have been record) 66-yard field goal. If he knows he can kick, what the hell else do you supposed to do on 4th down.
  4. Speaking of that Rams game, Sam Bradford needs to learn the 2-minute drill, and when to throw the football IMMEDIATELY. It costs the Rams a much needed road win.
  5. The Rams should be at least 5-1. YEAH, I SAID IT. Detroit and Miami should have been road wins. Unclear about that Chicago game but at least they should have been in the lead for those games. Tough breaks in those losses.
  6. Who in the hell is this Richard Sherman guy from Seattle? For a guy who hasn’t seen a postseason yet, he sure thinks he  has the right to go tell off to a Super Bowl-winning QB that he is better than him. Get a championship first, then talk trash. Learn something from Gary Payton, even if it means going to another team to get it.
  7. Speaking of RGIII…I think he is finally learning what the NFL is like. After a mild concussion last week…Dude, they are just getting started with you.
  8. Speaking of Washington D.C., the Washington Nationals front office do not want to win any championships. If that’s the case, they should all be fired. NEXT SEASON!!
  9. The San Francisco Giants are no punks, they got to the NLCS for a reason. This is about to be (hopefully) a great NLCS, funny though how 2 things surface from this matchup. 1) 25 years ago, these two teams played to a thrilling 7-game series with the Cardinals, with the Cardinals winning that before losing to the Minnesota Twins in the Fall Classic. 2) These 2 teams are the last 2 champions, interesting to see who gets there again.
  10. NBA season is around the corner, NHL season is down in the dumps. Last year, it was the other way around.
  11. I don’t feel sorry for the New York Yankees. I’m a long-time hater and I don’t care. Feel sorry for Derek Jeter though. Looks like (as a friend put it) BALCO East needs to break out the juice for another comeback.
  12. The New York Giants are the best team in the NFC, until someone knocks them off, no one else is better. PERIOD. Just ask the San Francisco 49ers.
  13. Back to the Rams…they scored more points the 49ers did. Take that San Fran!
  14. Philip Rivers and Tony Romo are the same people…Yet, I think both are trying to fire their offensive head coaches. Shame on you!
  15. I’ll miss Ray Lewis…that man is cursed. He got in that Madden game again and now he won’t even play the rest of the season. I hope it’s not the last one. If so, this is a bad way to go out. Very bad way.
  16. I got at least 1 win in fantasy football this week, and that I didn’t have a full team with that.

Coming up, a Q/A interview with author Allen Schatz and hopefully get one of the ladies from the Lingerie Football League’s St. Louis Saints.

Stay tuned.
