The View From Mt. Airy

AND NOW…INTRODUCING…THE VIEW FROM MT. AIRY, and here to show you the view, HIS view, Phil Allen.

PHIL:

That’s right Palmer….warn them……pack that radio in ice…….it’s going to get heated!!!

Because somebody gotta tell me how, just how, Jose Oquendo is STILL the 3rd base coach after 17 years…..

How about this?

The year Mike Matheny was drafted by the Brewers , Jose hit .291 and played 163 games…… .994 fielding pct. Top 10 in hits, triples and OBP….

Let us not forget he was Whitey Herzog’s “secret weapon” and played 8 positions as a Cardinal in ’87 including throwing 3 shutout innings against the Braves (he lost in the 19th on a double by Ken Griffey, Sr.)

The very week he got the Cardinals 3rd base coaching job, Mike Matheny was released by the Blue Jays, could not hit, average defensive player who couldn’t beat out Darren Fletcher……
Comes to McGwire country and all of a sudden….he’s IRONMAN?

Hmmmmm?

Poor Jose. He stands in the 3rd base box for 14 seasons while Matheny goes to SF as a free agent, retires and is
coaching little league! Yet HE gets the call over Oquendo?

Yeah, let’s talk Cardinals….the conversation, unlike the team, will not be vanilla. See, we pay attention out here to “baseball heaven” and we have watched as the Cardinals have gotten very melanin free over the past decade. The franchise of Gibson, Flood, Brock, Ozzie, “Shake & Bake” McBride, Jeff Leonard, and more has how many black players today?

Hmmmmm?

While we’re asking questions, am I alone when I look at the rise of Oregon Ducks basketball and wonder when the sanctions hit? Ok, the rise of football at OU made them more high profile the resultant publicity aided recruiting and, Voila!!

NOT.

That would be that same program which is currently under investigation again and whose former head coach Charles (Chip) Kelly is banned from coaching in the NCAA for another year, and even then would have to apply for reinstatement? I also give you the Davin Bellamy and a group of coeds cuddled up on a couch with a bong. Prosecution rests with this final statement. I understand when a program lands a 5 star kid who elevates the team to new heights, we love that. An Artis Gilmore here, an Xavier McDaniel there. I get it. However, when you’ve add three or four over an 18 month period, my alarm breaks. Isolated campus plus success should not equal shenanigans but……..

MLB 2016 kicks off in a week. Here in Philly we’ve prepared for the 100 loss death march the Philadelphia Phillies wilk embark upon in April. This is a team in transition (no bullpen, bad outfield, thin starting pitching) and I’ll watch the kids like Mikael Franco and Nick Williams. There is a future here. The good news is the Phillies know there bad. They are offering a monthly pass. Cost $50 and gets you into every home game in April. There are 12, so thats $4.50 per game. Begging the question, would you rather win games at full price or get MLB at 1980 prices?

They should include a heated blanket and brandy for the icebox that Citizens Bank Park is at night until May! But if you are that hearty a soul get yours here. By the way, I heard its the Year of The Cubs? Can it be?

THE A-TRAIN RANT 8.0!!!

It’s been such a long time since I have ranted that I might just do a HUGE rant for this one! But let’s go!

This rant is sponsored by…

THE ANGRY REDBIRD!!

  1. Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants winning their 2nd championship in 3 years. How sad it was for Miguel Cabrera who has just recently suffered the Carlos Beltran Syndrome. The Carlos Beltran Syndrome was made in 2006 after Beltran struck out in the 2006 NLCS freezing on a called third strike that ended that series. When you get frozen on a third strike to end a World Series…everything that was done that season almost meant nothing. Sorry Mr. Triple Crown.
  2. Pablo Sandoval isn’t in the same league as Albert Pujols, Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson. But what he did in Game 1 was better than all 3. And I hate that. That’s just the homer in me.
  3. St. Louis Rams fans should be satisfied about the 3-5 record, forget what happened against New England in London. Yeah they gave up a couple of games and should have a winning record…but remember these are the Rams.
  4. Steven Jackson should be traded…time to give up the golden goose. YEAH I SAID IT. Tired of defending this dude.
  5. Sam Bradford finally has an offensive coordinator that will be back next season. Just need to work on the…offense.
  6. Jerry Jones needs to give up his job as general manager of Dallas. Tony Romo needs to give up his starting job as quarterback. Does the name Marc Bulger ring a bell? Jason Garrett needs to just be an offensive coordinator.
  7. Atlanta Falcons are 7-0. Guess what? BIG DEAL. Win a game in the playoffs, then you can celebrate. While you sitting there saying that I’m a hater. Let me put some truth in your minds. Last two playoff games the Falcons played, they lost to the Super Bowl winner. Having one of the first round byes doesn’t get a team to the Super Bowl…teams that constantly play get you there. Don’t believe me…ask the last two champions.
  8. If Lance Armstrong is banned from cycling, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa need to be banned from baseball.
  9. Stephen A. Smith did not say the N-word…meaning he’ll keep his job on First Take.
  10. Cari Champion is the sexiest sportscaster on TV. Find me one better. And I’ll disagree with you.
  11. No hockey, sorry fans. You got the hardwood or the gridiron. Suck it up.

Well so much for the huge rant…might do another one this week. Stay tuned. Some NBA is in store…The Association coming soon.

The A-Train

LEAVE ALBERT ALONE…THANK YOU!

Ok, people of St. Louis! SERIOUSLY! SHUT UP ABOUT ALBERT! All of this constant derogatory bashing about him is really getting old. Even though I can appreciate a good joke (If I see one), but the man did what he was supposed to do. The Cardinals’ front office where doing what they were going to do. Which is…NOT PAY HIM! So don’t get upset at him when he was supposed to get a well-deserved paycheck from the team that he helped in 11 seasons get to 3 World Series and earn 2 championships. Funny though, I haven’t heard the same damn mess about Jack Clark, Mark McGwire, Will Clark (in his brief time), and other superstars that have left the Cardinals to go to other teams. Give “the mang” his respect! Some of the media IN OUR AREA is dogging the crapola out of him…FOR WHAT? What did he do to you, except leave.

I have learned in sports that loyalty from athletes is pretty much dead. You will hardly ever see an athlete for a particular team play with the same team for their entire career. Steven Jackson of the St. Louis Rams is a good example…but even I don’t believe he’ll be around next season. Athletes are trying to better themselves just like you and I. Yep, we are the ones that pay their contracts. If that’s the case, we wouldn’t go to the sporting events or wouldn’t watch the games. But guess what, we do. We’re stuck and have to get over that.

Albert performed very well here in St. Louis. Granted to you hardcore baseball fans that love the little things, Albert didn’t do those things as good as you hoped. Believe it or not, those fans knew what they were getting when he made the team back in 2001. He was a decent base runner, terrible outfielder, and (in my opinion) crapola 3rd baseman. Played 1st base and became a much better fielder. Now, you can’t sit here and tell me his offensive numbers weren’t amazing. Tell me the last time a man of his caliber hit .300, 30 HR, and 100 RBIs in 10 consecutive seasons. I’LL WAIT. Remind you, he did this for the Cardinals. Not the Yankees. Not the Red Sox. Not even the Cubs. Something that not even, as the old-timers and most fans love the most, Stan “The Man” Musial ever did. He did this for the “best fans in baseball.”

My point is, just respect the guy. Whatever he did outside of the game is his business. If he treated you indifferently then that was on you, innocent or not. I never got a chance to meet him, sorry, I wasn’t blessed with opportunities. That’s life, I got over it. So can you, the irate Cardinal fan. Yeah you can stick it to him that he’s not in the postseason or he had an off year, but trust and believe, he’ll be back and until then I’ll cheer for the man. Because he is still a great player and I enjoyed his time here. I can’t wait till the day he returns to STL…whether you boo or cheer, I’ll stand up and applaud (in my opinion) the BEST CARDINAL EVER. I SAID IT! Cards management…YOU RUINED IT!

THE A-TRAIN RANT 6.0!

What’s good! After a wild weekend of fun, excitement and atrociousness. I want to start this “END OF THE WEEKEND” rant with a little fun and excitement, yet reality. Then I’ll give a piece of my mind to a certain Cardinals player.

BOOM!

  1. The St. Louis Rams have a great defense, I applaud Jeff Fisher for his defensive scheme, 9 sacks said a lot against Arizona QB Kevin Kolb on Thursday night. Hope Mr. Kolb found his teeth after that game.
  2. Now while the Rams have shown promise to getting over .500 for the first time since ’06, they still haven’t won a road game yet. Convince me, then I’ll yell, “We going to the Super Bowl this season!” I should make a bet.
  3. To the Atlanta Braves fans (at Turner Field)…if you want to throw things on the field, throw them at your own damn team! Their defense was THE reason they lost that “one-game playoff.” Either way it went, that “infield-fly” rule wasn’t going to save the season.
  4. Speaking of the Braves, Chipper Jones played his final game as a MLB player. Funny thing was he knew the Braves were going to lose to that game…WEEKS BEFORE the playoff game. Damn fine way to go out on the bottom!
  5. This year’s baseball playoffs are PURE CRAPOLA! And I stand on that. Even if the Cardinals win it all again, this format to the playoffs is a piece of sh**.
  6. Bud Selig loves to ruin the game of baseball. That’s all from that.
  7. Cam Newton is starting to understand what a sophomore slump really is…at least I think so. Losing to the Seahawks shows you that..(CLEARS THROAT) THE NFC WEST IS THE BEST! Everybody else, just get over it.
  8. Looks like my prediction about Alabama beating the tar off Mizzou by at least 35 is really coming into play. I might watch just to see what happens. Mr. Pinkel, you have one more year left. **WAVES**
  9. Hey Green Bay Packer fans…the Rams are better than your team.
  10. RGIII…how does it feel to be knocked on your ass at home. I told you that you were going to get it. Welcome to the NFL.
  11. Long live Chuck Pagano!!!
  12. 3 teams in the SEC are in the Top 5…waiting on the hatred once again from fans outside of the S.E.C.
  13. If Miguel Cabrera doesn’t win the AL MVP in a landslide, all the voters should give up their voting rights…to the fans.
  14. After all of this, I have to talk about the St. Louis Cardinals. **Sighs** First off, congrats for getting to the Division Series.
  15. Finally…MATT HOLLIDAY SUCKS, HE’S NOT CLUTCH AND HE NEVER WILL BE! Cardinals paid this ridiculous idiot of a player over $126 million, and got completely suckered by Scott Boras. Yeah, he hit a home run in the Wild Card game…the Wild Card game. Yet, when the chips are down, he plays just like he has played previously…horrible. Oh, everybody else played like crap from the 7th inning on in this series against the Nationals but I want to focus on the $126 million DOUCHE. For those that don’t remember, this is the same guy who couldn’t play a Game 7 in last year’s World Series, because he was “hurt.” Now for a guy that is 6’4″, 230 lbs, and has received hitting advice from (get this) Mark McGwire. He should be the best damn player on this team, he should be driving in runs like Miguel Cabrera did. He mustered 102 runs batted in this season, which is great, but you and I know he’s much better than this. So you telling me, the fans can’t get the guy who batted .340, hit 36 home runs, and drove in 137 runs back in 2007??? The fans can’t get it. Yet, some imbeciles want to say he’s clutch. You wouldn’t know that truth if it slapped you in the face. Now let’s go back to all of those fans that said, “Oh, we don’t need Albert Pujols anymore.” AND “Let him rot in Anaheim.” AND my personal favorite, “F*** Pujols.” They could sure use that in the lineup right now especially after the man who has taken his spot in the lineup is supposed to be…that guy. What a joke. Yet, I’m cheering for him. Thanks for suckering me, Matt. You are doing a tremendous job.
  16. When is hockey coming on again?

I’m done. More to come soon.

Thoughts? Concerns? Ideas are welcome. Please reply below.

Thanks.
